Bath is one of the most historic and picturesque towns in the west country. Mountain biking is a cheap and environmentally friendly way of exploring the area in and around Bath.
The popularity of the University cycling club and the recently rebuilt BMX track shows the affiliation Bath has with biking. It also caters extensively for mountain bikers and adventure cyclists.
Red or Black Trails?
Experienced riders looking for a challenge might consider riding either red (difficult) or black (severe) graded trails. Just 15 miles West of Bath you will find the Mendip Hills, which can offer just such a challenge. Visit the Trail Grading Explained page to learn what trail grading is. Red grade trails are easier than black but are still true mountain biking trails requiring a high level of skill, ability and concentration. A good quality mountain bike is essential.
Be Careful
Intermediate riders will be better suited to the flatter trails in and around Bath, or the plentiful green (easy) and blue (moderate) graded routes in the North Wessex Downs, 20 miles east of Bath. If you are contemplating Landscape Rides, you should be aware that trail conditions may have deteriorated since the route was surveyed. Landscape Rides tend to improve and deteriorate dependent on weather conditions as many are un-surfaced. Remember that the grading system refers to the technical challenge of the trail, not how long it is.
