The newly named ‘Wimberry Bridge’ at Cannop Cycle Centre in the Forest of Dean officially opened on Tuesday 20 March.
The bridge has been named for the former Wimberry Branch Line which connected Cannop Colliery (now the site of Cannop Cycle Centre) with Wimberry Colliery. The new bridge uses the existing footings of the old branch line bridge.
The opening event was attended by representatives from local organisations and businesses that have links to the project. The bridge was formally opened by Tim Rollinson, Director General of Forestry Commission and the four Verderers of the Forest of Dean.
Cannop Cycle Centre now boasts a variety of trails for all abilities. The project secured funding for the blue (moderate) grade Verderer’s Trail which opened in July 2011. The Cannop trails have been largely developed by volunteers and Forestry Commission working together over a number of years. The wider trail network in the Forest of Dean was also voted Best Trail Network in MBR magazine’s December 2011 issue.
