Work on the trails at Cardinham Woods, near Bodmin in Cornwall is continuing, and the focus is now moving on to the second red (difficult) grade trail sections that will branch off the main blue (moderate) grade trail.
Recreation Ranger Chris Mason organised a successful evening meeting on Tuesday 4th December, with regular users of the woods. From 5pm the team spoke with walkers, horse riders and others who wanted to find out more about the trails and have any questions answered. There will always be concerns about conflict between users and Cardinham is a popular site for many forms of outdoor recreation, but it was great to have constructive and direct discussions with those who love these woodlands. All people enjoying the countryside need to be considerate, and respect each other’s right to be there, we live on a small and crowded island! You can find advice on how horses and cyclists can coexist.
From 6.30pm people interested in using the new trail came along to see photos of the latest trail routes, meet the team including trail builder extraordinaire Joe Clixby, fresh out of his digger, and find out about the way the trails will work in practice. The turn out was over 50 people and several have put their names forward to be considered trail ‘ambassadors’. There is talk of calling them trail ‘fairies’ (thanks Russ!) but regardless of the final name these people will help report any issues they find to FC and help other riders enjoy themselves. While Chris will be making thorough monthly inspections of the trails, a handful of riders who regularly ride trails will be invaluable as his daily ‘eyes and ears’. From this we also hope to set up a volunteer trail maintenance group in time, open to anyone who wants to help keep the trails in tip-top condition.
At the time of writing a full launch of the blue trail and red sections will be around Easter time. Forest operations will be taking place in the north of the woods until 31st March, therefore a large stretch will have to remain closed until work is complete. However, we know many of you are itching to ride the new trail so thanks for your patience!
Thanks to everyone who gave up their evening to come along, and to Woods Cafe for the warm welcome and yummy mince pies! The team found the evening a really positive and valuable experience.
