Savernake Sizzler
21 Jul 2013 - 00:00 in Pewsey
The Savernake Sizzler Sportive is debuting this year on July 21st, in aid of Rainbow Trust Children's Charity. Organised by GiveItSome, the new Swindon-based project run by local father and daughter team, Paul Greenman and Penny Pauw.
Participants can choose to ride 90, 65 or 35 miles through some of Wiltshire's most stunning landscapes, passing quaint villages along the way as well as the Kennet and Avon Canal. The routes promise a fantastic mix of challenging hilly, winding lanes and straight, fast sections.
GiveItSome are deliberately keeping entry fees low, enabling participation from as little as £8, to encourage riders to take up the challenge and raise funds for the Rainbow Trust Children's Charity. A free t-shirt is on offer for all those raising money specifically for Rainbow Trust.
Rainbow Trust provides emotional and practical support to families who have a child with a life threatening or terminal illness. The charity relies on fundraising for 95% of its income so events like this are essential in providing vital support to families when they need it most.
Don't forget to take advantage of the event village, at Milton Lilbourne Village Hall, with lots of cycling related stalls, tea and coffee, after ride treats and vegetarian chilli. There'll also be free sports massages on offer, a perfect end to a hard cycle.

Bristol Bikefest 2013
8 Jun 2013 - 00:00 in Bristol
Ashton Court is once again host to the Ritchey Bristol Bikefest one of the most loved cycle events in the country.
The event, set in the heart of Bristol is a permanent fixture in the UK biking calendar and has been drawing riders from all over the country since it began 12 years ago. In the last few years we have witnessed possibly the best course in the UK relay race scene and the playing field for 12 and 6hr endurance solo and team events, the UK single-speed champs and 3hr novice event. For 2013 the all weather course in Ashton Court will be once more the battle ground of the Bikefest. Properly tested during the rather unforgiving summer of 2012 the course managed to hold up perfectly and has put lots of smiles on riders when coming over the finish line since its full launch at the end of 2011. Back to Roots Race Weekend
8 Jun 2013 - 00:00 in , UK
The search is on to find the South West's ultimate trail rider!
Raising funds for Summer Adventures, a two week residential couirse for young carers in and Teignbridge, and organised by University of 's charitable organisation Community Action. Literally anyone who has a mountain bike can come along have a great time and support a fantastic cause!
Saturday 8th June will see a 3-in-1 event that harks back to when people didn't class themselves as XC or Enduro or All Mountain, they just had fun on their bike. The day will be split into three stages. The first stage will be a technical skills test: think of it as an obstacle course for your bike. The course won't be timed but if you fail to clear any of the obstacles then you'll get a time penalty. The second event will be a test of your downhill skills, the course will be achievable on any bike and staying smooth and avoiding punctures will see you through the best. There will be a par time to beat and any time under that will warrant further time penalties. In the evening the winner will be decided by a Cross Country Finale. The start of the race will be handicapped by the penalty points picked up throughout the day and the first to cross the line is the overall winner! The catch is that you are only allowed one bike all day. So do you pick a mid travel full sus to excel during the day or a short travel hard tail to chase them down during the evening?
Sunday 9th June will see a mini Downhill event using two of the off piste tracks. You'll get one race run on each and your cumulative time decides the results! On both days there will also be a Summer Fête including bouncy castle, giant games and hook a duck so feel free to bring your family along to enjoy a lovely Summer's day in beautiful Haldon Forest Park whilst you have fun on your bike! If you're interested visit Facebook page where all information will be posted. Ride On! Continue Reading

The Eden Project is inviting cyclists on bikes of all shapes and sizes to pedal through the iconic site for the first time, this Bank Holiday Monday (May 6). Cyclists and cycle clubs are being encouraged to make Eden the destination for their Bank Holiday morning cycle with a suggested arrival time of 11am.
After a pitstop for a complimentary snack and drink, at midday the cyclists will then be invited to take a guided cycle tour through the various outdoor habitats of Eden – otherwise known as the Tour d’Eden - culminating in a snaking climb up the challenging land train route. This route is being opened to bikes especially for this day. Eden already gives a discount for cyclists but for one day only, people from Cornwall and Devon – whether they cycle to Eden or not - will be able to take advantage of the return of the Locals’ Annual Pass which allows unlimited entry to Eden for a year, costing just £7.50. Proof of residence and a photo ID is required. Cyclists who ride to Eden for the event but don’t live in Cornwall or Devon can still take advantage of a specially discounted rate of £15 for adults. Young cyclists aged 16 or under will be admitted free. Everyone who rides their bike to Eden on the day will get a special cyclists’ snack breakfast as part of the entry price. Riders are being encouraged to come from all corners of the South West and they have the option to use the picturesque clay trails for their route through Eden’s surroundings. Eden, along with Wheal Martyn, Sustrans and a variety of local businesses, agencies and community members have come together to form the Clay Trails Partnership to make sure that the trails are available to cyclists, walkers and horse-riders alike. Cyclists are being asked to arrive at 11am on Monday May 6 at the Visitor Centre (Eden’s main entrance building) where secure cycle parking will be provided. The Tour d’Eden will set off from the Visitor Centre at 12 noon and will take a route up the hill to Orange Car Park. They will then circle the Eden outer estate before hitting the downhill route to the Core, riding through the Eden site and then up the steep, winding land train route back to the Visitor Centre. Organisers emphasise that it is not a race, more of a cycling parade. The Tour d’Eden is part of the Start initiative’s Be the Start campaign. Taking place throughout May, the campaign will help people find out about all the different, simple ways people can live a more sustainable lifestyle and be the start of the better, more sustainable future we all want. Start which was inspired by HRH the Prince of Wales and its objective is to present an inspiring picture of a sustainable future. The Locals' Annual Pass is available exclusively to people whose primary residence is in Cornwall or Devon (i.e. addresses with postcode starting TR, TQ, PL or EX). Visitors should bring photo ID with their address on it such as a photo driving licence (which has both) or alternatively a passport accompanied with a utility bill to prove that your primary residence is in Cornwall or Devon.

This year’s ‘Mud’ Series, consisting of three events, will see competitors venturing on to the outskirts of Dartmoor, and the final event will be a combination of off-road rural and urban checkpoints!
- 2nd December 2012 – The Pre-Christmas Turkey Burner – East Dartmoor (Manaton area)
- 10th February 2013 – South Hams and South Dartmoor (South Brent area)
- 14th April 2013 – Bristol (Ashton Court area)
There will be the usual Long (3.5 hours) and Short (2 hours) Score options in which to visit as many checkpoints as possible in order to maximise your score. This year you can enter as a ‘Solo’, ‘Pair’, ‘Family’ and new this season, as a ‘Team’. The new ‘Team’ category is open for teams of up to 4 people – so whether it be a group of friends or work colleagues wanting a team bonding experience or a fun and friendly competitive outdoor challenge, this category will hopefully see teams from across the south west fighting it out to be the 2012-2013 ‘Team Mud Champions’! As with previous years, there will be prizes for the winners in each category, and the results from each event will earn you points in the overall series results too. The first event in the series starts on 2nd December, and will be based on Eastern Dartmoor near Manaton. The map will be covering some unique and varied landscapes – from bridleways crossing open moorland through to rural lanes, RUPP’s and wooded areas. New for this year too, the start/finish point for each event wil be a solid base such as a Village Hall (rather than pop up marquees and gazebos). This means a dry area to register, access to toilets and more often than not somewhere to purchase drinks and food and then sit and chat with other competitors about your ride!
