Revealing the Economic Value of Off-Road Cycling

Fill out a survey for the chance to win a mountain bike!

A 12 month survey of off-road cyclists at Haldon Forest Park in Devon will commence in January 2012. The study is being conducted by Neil Ormerod as part of his three year PhD project in partnership with Cycle Adventure and University.

Revealing the Economic Value of Off-road Cycling – the pilot survey in the Forest of Dean proved very popular

Neil’s project is entitled ‘Revealing the Economic Value of Off-Road Cycling as a Tourism Product’ and has the aim of developing a better understanding of the behaviour, participant profile and economic value of off-road cyclists. This research is important as there is little academic literature relating to off-road cycling, and it has received significantly less attention from policy makers in comparison to urban cycling. As a result, this study will be one of the first longitudinal studies to demonstrate how an investment in recreation impacts on the tourism sector.

Haldon Forest Park has been chosen as the study location, and Neil will be asking off-road cyclists to spare a few minutes to complete a short questionnaire about their off-road cycling experience. As a thank you, each participant will receive a free water bottle and can enter a prize draw for the chance to win a mountain bike or a Whackjob Trail T-shirt! www.whackjob.co.uk . Look out for the blue Cycle Adventure tent at Haldon Forest Park and get involved!

A pilot survey completed in the Forest of Dean this past weekend attracted 50 responses in two hours. Many cyclists were keen to make their contribution to the study and if you’re in the area, we hope you will too.
